Read the changes to skills assessment for automotive trades
TRA (Trades Recognition Australia) is removing the mandatory OSAP assessment requirement for some passport countries for automotive jobs.
Instead, qualified applicants from countries with similar qualification systems can use the simpler and cheaper MSA (migration skills assessment) program.
This decision came after discussions with industry reps and considering countries with standards like Australia’s.
This change now allows qualified applicants from 1 April 2023 to choose the cheaper MSA program (managed by TRA). OSAP (offshore skills assessment program) assessments are still an option for those needing an Australian qualification.
The below occupations and countries are now eligible for the MSA program:
An example: If you’re a UK qualified Motor Mechanic, you can now apply through TRA and bypass the technical interview stage. This will save you $2,000 in fees and bypass the lengthy wait for a technical interview.
Renting a property in Australia can be a daunting task, especially for those who are new to the country.
With the high cost of living and competitive rental market, it’s important to have a solid plan in place to secure a rental property.
Below, we discuss some tips and techniques to help you get a rental property in Australia.
Research the Market
Before you start your search for a rental property, it’s important to research the market in the area you are interested in.
Look at the average rental prices, vacancy rates, and the types of properties available. Realestate.com.au and search engines are a good starting point.
Thorough research will give you an idea of what to expect and help you determine a realistic budget for your rental.
Save for a Security Deposit
Most landlords in Australia require a security deposit before you can move into a rental property. This is usually equivalent to four to six weeks’ rent.
It’s important to start saving for this deposit as soon as possible to avoid any delays in securing a property. You may also need to pay the first month’s rent in advance, so make sure you have enough funds to cover these costs.
Prepare Your Documents
When applying for a rental property, you will need to provide certain documents to the landlord or real estate agent. These may include proof of income, references from previous landlords, and a copy of your ID.
It’s a good idea to have these documents ready before you start your search, as it will make the application process smoother and show the landlord that you are a serious and organised tenant.
Consider getting references from your home country before you leave for Australia.
Consider a Guarantor
If you are a student or have a low income, you may need a guarantor to secure a rental property. A guarantor is someone who agrees to pay your rent if you are unable to.
This can be a family member or friend who has a stable income and good credit history. Having a guarantor can increase your chances of getting a rental property, especially if you are a first-time renter.
Be Prepared to Negotiate
In Australia, the cost of living and renting can be high, so it’s important to be prepared to negotiate with the landlord or real estate agent. This could include negotiating the rent price, the length of the lease, or any additional fees.
It’s also a good idea to have a backup plan in case your first choice falls through. In this competitive market, it’s commonplace to receive rejected applications.
A backup plan could include having a list of other properties you are interested in or being open to different locations.
Seek Professional Help
If you are struggling to find a rental property or are unsure of the process, it may be beneficial to seek professional help.
There are many real estate agents and property managers who specialise in helping people find rental properties. They can also provide valuable advice and guidance on the rental market in your desired area.
By following these tips and techniques, you can increase your chances of securing a rental property in Australia. Remember to do your research, save for a security deposit, and be prepared to negotiate.
With determination and a solid plan, you can find the perfect rental property for your needs.

Exciting news as South Australia expands their DAMA’s to include more occupations. Read the latest update on South Australia DAMA’s.
Update on South Australia DAMA’s
Yankalilla SA, Australia
The Designated Area Migration Agreements (DAMAs) in South Australia – SA Regional DAMA and Adelaide City DAMA – have undergone updates and expansions. The SA Regional DAMA now includes 128 additional occupations in various sectors such as construction and trades, agribusiness, ICT, health, education, and renewable energy.
Both DAMAs have been extended until 30 June 2025, with the SA Regional DAMA now offering a higher annual nomination ceiling, increasing from 750 to 2000 nomination places per year.
Furthermore, the pathway to permanent residency remains available for all visa holders under both DAMAs.
South Australia has also maintained certain concessions, including the age concession up to 55 years, a 10% reduction to the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT), as well as concessions for English language proficiency and work experience.
It is important to note that the occupations of Grape Grower (121215), Actors, Dancers, and other Entertainers (211999), and Dancer or Choreographer (211112) have been removed from the DAMAs.
Designated Area Migration Agreements (DAMAs) enables some Australian regions to establish their own conditions for skilled migration. These agreements are customised to cater to the distinctive economic and demographic requirements of specific areas, which may not necessarily align with the broader national immigration policies.
Regions that are part of the DAMA can sponsor skilled workers for positions that are locally in demand, which may not be covered by the general skilled migration program. This can encompass occupations that are crucial for regional growth but do not meet the

criteria of other visa schemes.
Typically, DAMAs are created by negotiations between the Australian Government, state or territory authorities, and local stakeholders such as councils, industry associations, and employers. The terms of each DAMA may differ depending on the specific needs and circumstances of each participating region.
Essentially, DAMAs are designed to bolster regional economic development, address skilled labour shortages, and promote population growth in designated areas of Australia. They offer a pathway for skilled migrants to contribute to the advancement of regional communities while also pursuing their own professional goals.

Australia is a popular destination for people looking to move abroad for work, study, or to start a new life. However, the process of applying for an Australian visa can be complex and overwhelming.
Many people make mistakes during the application process that can result in delays or even rejection of their visa. To ensure a smooth and successful visa application, here are some common mistakes to avoid when applying for an Australian visa.
Not Seeking Professional Help
One of the biggest mistakes people make when applying for an Australian visa is not seeking professional help. While it may seem like a simple process, there are many intricacies and requirements that must be met in order to be granted a visa.
A migration agent can provide valuable guidance and assistance throughout the application process, increasing your chances of success.
Not Understanding the Visa Requirements
Each type of Australian visa has its own set of requirements that must be met in order to be granted. Many people make the mistake of not thoroughly understanding these requirements before applying.
This can result in a rejected application or delays while trying to gather the necessary documents. It is important to carefully read and understand the visa requirements before beginning the application process.
Providing Incomplete or Inaccurate Information
When filling out the visa application, it is crucial to provide complete and accurate information. Many people make the mistake of leaving out important details or providing incorrect information, which can lead to a rejected application.
It is important to double check all information before submitting the application to ensure its accuracy. Migrations agents check over applications and documents on multiple occasions throughout the visa process.
Not Meeting Health and Character Requirements
In order to be granted an Australian visa, applicants must meet certain health and character requirements. This often includes undergoing a medical examination and providing a police clearance certificate.
Many people make the mistake of not completing these requirements or not providing the necessary documents, resulting in additional paperwork. It is important to carefully follow all health and character requirements to avoid any delays or rejections.
It is also important to declare all criminal convictions, cautions and charges.
Not Applying for the Right Visa
Another common mistake is applying for the wrong type of visa. Australia offers a variety of visas for different purposes, such as work, study, or family sponsorship.
It is important to carefully research and understand which visa is most suitable for your situation before beginning the application process. Applying for the wrong visa can result in a rejected application and may also negatively affect future visa applications. Consulting with an experienced migration agent before starting the visa process is advisable.
The visa application process can take several months, so it is important to start the process as early as possible. Many people make the mistake of waiting until the last minute to apply, which can result in delays or even missing important deadlines.
It is important to plan ahead and give yourself enough time to complete the application and gather all necessary documents.
By avoiding these common mistakes, you can increase your chances of a successful Australian visa application. Remember to seek professional help, thoroughly understand the visa requirements, provide accurate information, meet health and character requirements, apply for the right visa, and start the process early.
With careful planning and attention to detail, you can make your dream of moving to Australia a reality!

We caught up with mortgage broker Ross Hanrahan to discuss buying a house in Australia as a new migrant.
Ross is a mortgage broker in Sydney, and also an expat himself. Below, we share things to consider before purchasing property in Australia.
What is your visa status?
Your visa status will determine if you’re liable to pay foreign investors tax. It will also dictate if you’re eligible for Australia’s First Homeowners support.
You can use VEVO to check your Australian visa status and send a copy to a mortgage broker like Ross. A mortgage broker will advise you on your rights to purchase Australian property, and what fees to expect.
If you’re in the early stages of choosing a visa pathway, you may wish to consider permanent residency options. Australian permanent residency will allow you more freedoms when buying a home in Australia.
When buying a house in Australia as a new migrant, it’s important to understand the process.
Many Australian properties are sold at auction. Buyers are required to have finance pre-approval in place before going to auction.
Generally, it takes around 10 days to gain pre-approval. This finance is then valid for 180 days.
Another consideration is the ‘200-day rule’. When purchasing your first property as a permanent resident, you must have been in Australia for more than 200 days to avoid a stamp duty surcharge.
Settling into a new country is exhausting. Securing a rental, a job, the kids schooling and making friends keeps you very busy.
Using a good mortgage broker can simplify the process of buying a house and ensure you get the most out of your budget.
To learn more about buying property in Australia, you can follow Ross’ blog.
The Australian Taxation Office is another good source of information when considering your purchase.
Happy house hunting!

Australia’s migration program runs from 1 July to 30 June. Each year, the Government sets the size and composition of the migration program. Understanding Australia’s Migration Program can give you insight into your chances of securing a visa.
Australia’s Migration Program
The program consists of three streams: Skilled, Family and Special Eligibility.
The skilled stream is created to attract highly skilled workers into Australia. This stream supports the Australian economy and fills labour shortages.
Popular skilled stream visas include skilled, employer sponsored, business and talent applications.
The family stream enables Australian citizens, permanent residents, or Eligible NZ citizens to reunite with immediate family members. This includes partners, parents, orphan relatives, aged dependent relatives, and carers.
Popular family stream visas include partner, parent and remaining relative applications.
The special eligibility stream includes applicants who do not fit into skilled or family streams. This stream is very small.
An example is former permanent residents returning to Australia.
How many visas are available?
There are two primary considerations for each year’s migration program:
How many visas will be available?
Where will visas be allocated?
The skilled stream is crucial for supporting Australia’s economy, whilst the family stream is important for social cohesion.
Traditionally, the skilled stream receives the majority of visa allocations in each migration program. In 2019–20, the skill stream accounted for 70 per cent of the total Program. However in 2020-21, the Government created a more equal balance in attempt to reduce the partner visa backlog.
There is increased pressure on the Government to bring back this balance, especially for parents. The processing time for contributory parent visas has ballooned to 12+ years.
By understanding Australia’s Migration Program, you can appreciate why some visas take longer to process.
Our Case Processor Kimberley is based in this office. She assists with Australian partner visas and employment services.
Kimberley has been studying a Graduate Diploma in Migration Law this year. In 2024, she will complete her Capstone exam to become a licensed Migration Agent.
An update from our Migration Agent
It’s been a busy year with lots of exciting visa changes. Our Migration Agent Darren Chatt MARN:0211214 reflects on some of these changes.
“Australia is committed to attracting skilled migrants. We have seen many state sponsorship invitations for our clients, particularly teachers and nurses. We also welcomed WA’s Construction Visa Subsidy Program.”
There has been good news for temporary skilled visa holders too.
“The Department have announced easier pathways to PR (permanent residency) for temporary skilled visa holders. Soon, applicants will be able to apply for PR under the 186 visa after just two years of working with for sponsors.”
We have also received multiple requests and grants for our contributory parent visa clients.
Our partner visas continue to be processed in 2-6 months from lodgement. This includes both onshore and offshore applications. Submitting a complete application with the correct documents helps reduce processing times.

Automotive Electrician [321111]
Motor Mechanic (General) [321211]
Panelbeater [324111]*
Vehicle Painter [324311]
Diesel Mechanic [321212]

* Chinese applicants under the Panelbeater occupation will still be required to be assessed under OSAP, consistent with the nominated country/occupation combinations under Migration (IMMI 18/039: Mandatory Skills Assessment—Subclass 482 Visa) Instrument 2018.
An example: If you’re a UK qualified Motor Mechanic, you can now apply through TRA and bypass the technical interview stage. This will save you $2,000 in fees and bypass the lengthy wait for a technical interview.

Buying a house in Australia as a new migrant
Australia, LifestyleWe caught up with mortgage broker Ross Hanrahan to discuss buying a house in Australia as a new migrant.

Understand the process
When buying a house in Australia as a new migrant, it’s important to understand the process.
Many Australian properties are sold at auction. Buyers are required to have finance pre-approval in place before going to auction.
Generally, it takes around 10 days to gain pre-approval. This finance is then valid for 180 days.
Another consideration is the ‘200-day rule’. When purchasing your first property as a permanent resident, you must have been in Australia for more than 200 days to avoid a stamp duty surcharge.

Consider professional help
Settling into a new country is exhausting. Securing a rental, a job, the kids schooling and making friends keeps you very busy.
Using a good mortgage broker can simplify the process of buying a house and ensure you get the most out of your budget.

Happy house hunting!

Australia, Skilled Visa, Visa, Visa UpdateAustralia’s migration program runs from 1 July to 30 June.
